Black Oopium by YSL @

YSL Black Opium

With a glam rock aesthetic, this addictive gourmand floral entices with notes of black coffee for a shot of adrenaline, white florals to instantly seduce, and vanilla for sweetness and sensuality. Playing on the incongruity between the bitterness of the coffee bean accord, an ingredient never used before in such a high quantity in a feminine fragrance and radiant white flowers, BLACK OPIUM gives a sensation of light-headedness, bordering on ecstasy.

Black Opium is the new mega launch by YSL, as a flanker of the iconic Opium. It is 2015 Best New Female Fragrance by the Fragrance Foundation and Allure Best of Beauty award winner. The scent comprises of the Top notes of Pink pepper, Orange blossom, Pear, Heart notes of Coffee, Jasmine and Base notes of Vanilla, Patchouli, Cedar

My Review of YSL Black Opium

Black Opium is quite delicious, juicy and sweet. Black? No, Gothic? No, Generic? Yes, Opium? No. It is nothing like the original, and should have been an individual fragrance, not a flanker, and named something like pink toffee maybe. But I still love it, its nice, sweet, fun and long lasting. IMO, this fragrance would have done a lot better if it was marketed as something else, as the target audience is the young crowd and they don’t identify with opium and the opium lovers will not accept it as a flanker.

But is Black Opium a bad scent? No. I really wanted to buy it, but I tried it along with Alien and Diesel Loverdose, and they are all remarkably similar on me. I ended up buying Loverdose, as comparatively its cheaper, and has an additional liquorice note which I dig (smells like anise).
Black Opium opens up pretty sweet, with very little pink pepper, the coffee is barely there, blink and you miss it types. Its more like a mild sugary sweet coffee. And actually that is all I get from it, like maybe a flower or two kept near a cup of milky spicy-sweet coffee with vanilla ice-cream. But I still like it, and am not that much into gourmand scents. If you are, you will love it. But yet again, it’s not gothic, or black

Suitable for young girls, especially for those cold and dreary winter days, when a hot cup of coffee is all that is needed to bring some warmth back. Ummmmm delicious. But before you splurge, try it with loverdose, and you might find a cheaper alternative, or maybe Alien, which though pricy is such a high quality juice that a spray or two at max will last you till you decide to take a shower next, or maybe even after that.

The bottle is nice, a bit chunky, but the grey black colour with lots of sparkle, looks interesting. The longevity and sillage is quite good too, it’s a YSL so quality is definitely there. Maybe, just maybe, I will buy a tiny bottle some day.
